Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a set of specifications that define a standard way to integrate third-party learning applications (tools) with Learning Management Systems (LMS) or other educational platforms. LTI was developed by the IMS Global Learning Consortium, a non-profit organization that aims to create and promote interoperability standards in educational technology.
LTI 1.2 and LTI 1.3 are two different versions of the LTI standard, with LTI 1.3 being the latest and more advanced version. Here are some key differences between the two:
- Security and Authentication:
- LTI 1.2 uses OAuth 1.0a for security and authentication. OAuth 1.0a is an open standard for access delegation that enables users to grant limited access to their resources without sharing their credentials.
- LTI 1.3 adopts the newer and more secure OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC) protocols for authentication and authorization. OIDC is an identity layer on top of OAuth 2.0 that allows clients to verify users’ identities based on the authentication performed by an authorization server.
- LTI Advantage: LTI 1.3 introduces LTI Advantage, a suite of extensions that build upon the core LTI 1.3 specifications. LTI Advantage provides additional capabilities, such as:
- Assignment and Grade Services: Enables tools to manage and synchronize assignment and grade information
